Wind-permeable mesh banners for outdoor spans

What the job demanded

Wind is the governing constraint on any exterior banner, and it does not act politely. A solid vinyl panel across a fence or a building face collects the full pressure of a gust and transfers it into the grommets, the ties and whatever they are tied to, which is how banners tear at the corners and how fixings pull out of masonry. Perforated mesh lets air pass through and cuts that load substantially, but the perforation is not free. Every hole is ink that is not there, so effective coverage drops and artwork has to be built with heavier colour and larger type to hold up. Outdoor exposure adds rain, freeze-thaw and ultraviolet light, all of which attack the weakest point first, which is almost always the hem.

How it was produced

Printing ran UV-LED directly onto PVC-coated mesh. The ink is cured by ultraviolet diodes at the instant it is deposited, which matters more on mesh than on any other stock, because a wet ink film sitting over an open weave would otherwise bleed into the holes and mark the belt. The cured ink sits on and around the coated fibre rather than soaking into it, giving a stable image on both faces. Artwork was set with the perforation loss in mind, using solid ground colour and generous type rather than fine detail that the weave would swallow. Finishing decides how long the banner lasts: the edges were hemmed to double the material at the load-bearing perimeter, corners reinforced, and brass grommets set on centres appropriate to the span rather than on a default spacing.
